CMCH Synopsis: With the intention of uncovering aspects of adolescent asthma patients' experiences with their illness, researchers distributed video equipment to 21 teens from an urban hospital and inner city health center and used Video Intervention/Prevention Assessment (VIA) as a method of collecting data. In interviews at the beginning of the study, participants shared their medical and psychosocial history and assessed their quality of life. For the next four weeks, the participants created video diaries by recording their daily lives, the ways in which asthma affects them, their own thoughts and reflections, and input from their friends and family. After the completion of the film, a second interview with each participant was used to assess disease understanding, self-management, and well-being. The videos were examined from a medical perspective via observational techniques, from a psychological and social perspective using grounded theory, and from an anthropological perspective through visual ethnography and phenomenology. With VIA, the researchers were able to learn about environmental factors which had not come up in the participants' medical histories and they were able to examine problems with correct medicine usage. Themes that emerged from the videos included isolation from peers, body dysphoria, and fear of sudden death. The findings from VIA revealed much more difficulty in managing asthma for adolescents who did not understand asthma as well or who believed they did not have the power to control it. This study emphasizes the positive effects of both the process of making the videos and the understandings brought forth from their analysis. © Center on Media and Child Health
