CMCH Synopsis: 10 adolescents with spina bifida created video diaries over 8-12 weeks using hand-held camcorders. Spina bifida often results in paralysis and the use of a wheelchair. In these diaries, the adolescents recorded daily life activities, medically related activities, interviews with family and friends, and personal monologues. The videos were analyzed to see how independent the teens were. Adolescents whose parents were involved in their daily lives and health management were more likely than others to have a handicap-accessible home, engage in physical activities, and demonstrate the ability to manage their own health. These adolescents were also more likely to have an intensely close relationship with their parents - their lives were woven tightly together. These results indicate the importance of the parent-child relationship in facilitating the transition from childhood to adulthood among spina bifida patients. © Center on Media and Child Health
