CMCH Synopsis:
Researchers conducted 2 survey studies, one with 40 Latino high school students and another with 115 Latino college students. Since Latinos are underrepresented in mainstream media and are often shown negatively, the researchers wanted to see whether the amount and kinds of media they used influenced their self-esteem.
They found that the students who watched prime-time television and soap operas and the students who identified with the characters on television were more likely have low self-esteem. This was especially true among female Latinos and those who strongly identified as Latinos.
These results suggest that watching television may be harmful to the self-esteem of Latino adolescents and young adults. © Center on Media and Child Health
