CMCH Synopsis: 20 adolescents with moderate to severe asthma, were asked to create video diaries showing their life experience living with asthma. These diaries, recorded over a 4 to 8 week period using hand-held camcorders, include daily life activities, personal monologues, interviews with family and friends, and asthma management. When compared with the medical histories of the adolescents, the content of the video diaries shows that the teens were exposed to environmental triggers of their asthma and that they often misused their medication. These results suggest that this technique of information gathering, called Video Intervention/Prevention Assessment (VIA), is an effective way to understand the lives of adolescents with chronic illnesses. © Center on Media and Child Health
